Unwritten Party Etiquette

It’s that time of year for parties and get togethers, but as fun as holiday gatherings are, they also bring some tricky etiquette dilemmas. From what to wear to how to dress and party rules, we’re here to get you through the holiday season with finesse.

Shoe-Free House Party

As The Guest:

A hostess is within his/her rights to ask guests to remove their shoes - especially if it’s snowing or raining outside. To avoid being uncomfortable, bring an extra pair of your own shoes so you won’t have to go barefoot

As The Host:

In fact, a hostess may offer slippers to guests to avoid cold feet or embarrassment. However, a good hostess should be flexible and accommodating when necessary. If you don’t know your guest well or are hosting a large group, consider suspending the no-shoe rule for at least one night.

Dress to Impress

As The Guest:

Whether you’re invited to an ugly sweater or a Gatsby Christmas theme party, follow the dress code simply because it is what your host requested. When in doubt, dress it up rather than down if a dress code isn’t specified. Still not sure what to wear? Clear up any confusion beforehand by giving your host a quick call or sending a simple text. Don’t want to reach out? Check online for photos of last year’s event or, assuming you know your host, follow your instincts on his/her usual dressing habits to use as a guide.

As The Host:

Below are two favorite outside-of-the box themes for the holidays to try!

Tired of Ugly Sweaters? Try another holiday idea to create a festive atmosphere.  Plaid Party is easy for your guests to commit to and takes the pressure off of the dresscode for a casual get together.  Even easier, pick a favorite festive color for your guests to wear - anything from blue to red and green.

Tinsel and ‘Tinis is fun. Keep guests on their toes with a “wear something that sparkles” dresscode!

Hostess Gift

Don’t show up empty-handed, unless specifically asked/requested by the host. Hosting a holiday party is hard work. Be polite and bring a sweet and sophisticated gift to show your sincere thanks. Not sure what to bring? Here are a few of our Stylists’ go-to holiday party host and hostess gifts:

  • Gift basket with cookies, popcorn, coffees, teas, and hot cocoa mix

  • Holiday-themed tins of candy or baked goods

  • Bottle of wine or holiday-flavored liqueur

RSVP & Thank You Notes

Failing to RSVP is a major faux-pas, not to mention a huge hassle for your host. Respond in a timely manner as to whether or not you plan to attend — no later than two weeks after receiving the invitation and one week before the party.

You should definitely send a thank-you note to let your hostess know as a guest, you enjoyed the event and appreciated all of the work that went into making it possible.
