Boston, Here are the Do’s and Don’ts Working Remotely

Workplaces are transiting entirely online, which means that we’re attending a lot of video conference calls. Here’s a guide to the do’s and don’ts of video conferencing.

Know Your Space

Clean up the area around you before setting up your device or camera. Make sure there is nothing unobstructed your view and no distraction in the background.

Don’t sit too far from or too close to the camera. It’s best to put the camera at eye level.

Natural lighting or lighting on either side of your screen will work best.

Check Your Appearance

Dress how you would for an in-person meeting, and make sure to follow your workplace’s dress code.

Color - Bright or extremely dark colors do not translate well on camera. Avoid any colors that are too similar to your skin tone or any color that blends in with the background. Neutral or pastel tones are the most flattering, especially cool-toned shades of blue. Stick to colors that look the best on you and boost your confidence level.

Jewelry - Avoid sparkly jewelry so that it doesn’t catch. It’s also best to avoid pieces that make noise when you move, such as layered bracelets.

Tips & Tricks

Make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi connection and that your device is plugged in or fully charged.

Mute your side of the call if you’re not speaking. Your microphone can pick up a lot of background noise. If you need to get up during the call, you can turn off your camera to avoid causing any distractions.

If you don’t have time to tidy up your space, you can set up a virtual background.
