DIY Frayed Hem Denim at Home - Social Distancing Style in Boston

Are you bored with your clothes? During this time, we are spending more time at home, which means we’re staring at our closets more than usual. Instead of purchasing new clothes online that might take weeks to arrive, may not even fit and you have nowhere to go in them, make something new out of something old!

You'll find frayed hem jeans available in just about every style, from skinny to this season must have straight leg and bootcut jeans.

What you’ll need:

  • Measuring tape

  • Sharp scissors

  • Pen or white pencil

  • Well-loved jeans new or old

Note - jeans with a bit more cotton and less stretch work best to get the frayed edge.

Let’s get started!

1) Measure how much you'd like to trim off of the length and mark it with pen or white pencil.

2) Draw out the shape that you want to going for, so that you have a line to follow when cutting. Refold your pants so they are lined up along the side seam and cut along the line you drew.

3) Cut the hem. Now you can stop here for the perfect cut cropped hem or add a fun high-low effect by trimming some off of the front of each leg.

Tip - use the piece removed as a sort of stencil to ensure you are cutting the exact length on the other leg.

4) Place the stencil over the other leg, trace the shape and cut.

Try them on to make sure they are the perfect length. You can always go back and cut more off.

5)Tada! Now wash them to get that great frayed edge!

We know you’ll look fabulous in your “new” jeans! They'll fray more with each wash, so let them go or you can always trim them back after washing for a neater look.
