Amy's Closet Resolutions

January is definitely a time for reflection. For me, instead of making a list of resolutions that may or may not last more than a month, I use this time to think about what worked the previous year, and what didn’t. I think about what my goals are for the year to come and what I need to prioritize to make them happen. I also do a major closet sweep…

Recommendations for tackling your closet:

Grab a cup of coffee, water, or bubbly and put on some tunes and strip down to your skivvies. Dedicate a good hour (at least) to try everything on. And I mean everything.

Create piles. And yes, it’s going to look worse before it gets better. I usually have one pile that is to donate and a second that is to consign. Some items that I want to consign may be for a different season, so those will be hung and put in another closet. (At the moment, the only one with enough space is my son’s. Fortunately he doesn’t seem to mind, or to have even have noticed.)

Best investments to purchase during January sales:

Now that I have a better sense of what I have in my closet that 1. fits and 2. I actually still like, I’m able to move on to the next part of the process. Sale Shopping.

Although you might be physically and mentally exhausted from shopping over the holidays, now is the time to take advantage of some major discounts. Don’t be overwhelmed by the seemingly endless emails and images. Instead, stay focused and look to stock up on some timeless basics along with a few fun pieces that you might not have indulged on at full price.

  • Classic coats: Winter coats can be pretty expensive. This year I found a classic, black, double breasted wool blend belted coat for half off.

  • Denim: sometimes the only difference between the sale jean and the full priced one is the wash. No one will ever know or care what season a certain wash was from, so if you see one that you like- scoop it up. Guarantee it will still work for seasons to come.

  • Novelty tops: that daring one shoulder felt a little too indulgent at full price. But now that it’s priced more reasonably, I’m excited to add it to my arsenal of going out tops.

  • Classic shoes: this is the best time to score classic pumps or booties. I promise that nude Jimmy Choo will look just as stunning next season except that at half off right now, it’s even more beautiful!

Things to watch out for:

  • Make sure to check the return policy. You don’t want to be stuck with a sale item that you can’t wear because it doesn’t fit properly.

  • Don’t buy anything just because the sale is tempting. Remember that a bargain isn’t a good purchase if you didn’t like it at full price.

Of course, if this entire process seems intimidating, I would be glad to walk you through it! Let me know if you’d like help working through your closet and or shopping for fabulous sale pieces. You know it’s my favorite!!!

Happy 2020,
